CS Machogu Drives Kenya’s STEM Vision for Future Opportunities. During a recent and significant meeting held in Nairobi, CS Machogu engaged in discussions with Dr. Benson Banda, the esteemed president of Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education in Africa (SMASE Africa). The discourse prominently highlighted the paramount importance of a new grading system specifically designed for 8.4.4 students. This innovative system aims to create pathways to lucrative STEM job opportunities, particularly for those students showcasing proficiency in mathematics and science.
In further elaboration, Dr. Banda, who holds the esteemed position of Director of the National Science Centre in Zambia, underscored the multifaceted challenges that Africa encounters in the seamless integration of policy, research, and practical aspects in STEM education. He passionately advocated for leveraging the abundant resources within the continent to safeguard its interests and sought unwavering support from African Ministers of Education.
In his capacity as the patron of SMASE Africa, Dr. Banda explicitly urged CS Machogu to proactively advocate for an augmented level of support and investment in STEM education. The meeting, attended by Dr. Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, highlighted the Ministry’s impressive establishment of 103 STEM institutions. These institutions strategically aim to invigorate students’ interest in mathematics and science, fostering a conducive environment for their intellectual growth.
This assembly also boasted the presence of distinguished figures such as Dr. Elyas Abdi, Director General; Dr. Pius Mutisya, the Chairperson of the Centre for Mathematics Science Technology in Africa (CEMASTEA); and Mrs. Jacinta Akatsa, the Director of CEMASTEA. The overarching focus of this collaborative gathering unequivocally revolves around propelling STEM education to new heights, envisioning a future that is both brighter and more prosperous for the upcoming generations.
