Knec Must End Harassment of KCSE Candidates, Senators Say. In the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, four Senators have raised significant concerns about the alleged harassment and demoralization of candidates. They are urging the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to take immediate action.
To start, Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni expressed his apprehensions during a fundraising event for the NewDawn SDA church. Strongly condemning the recent arrests of three students supposedly in possession of unauthorized examination materials, Omogeni suggested a more measured approach. He proposed that students found with irregular papers should be allowed to complete their ongoing examinations before facing questioning.
Following suit, Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo echoed these concerns. Emphasizing the emotional distress imposed on parents who have invested significantly in their children’s education, Madzayo underscored the importance of professional procedures. He committed to bringing the matter to the Senate for further democratic and constitutional deliberations.
Further emphasizing these concerns, Migori Senator Eddy Oketch criticized government interference. Accusing the government of meddling with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to intimidate teachers in the region, Oketch called for clarity. Specifically addressing officials from the region, he urged the government to ensure that students receive grades reflective of their efforts.
In a similar vein, Senator Enock Wambui of Kitui County advocated for individual investigations. Cautioning against implicating an entire region based on the Education CS’s origin, Wambui stressed the need to separate politics from educational matters. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the future of the students.
Collectively, the Senators urged a fair and transparent process in handling examination irregularities. This, they believe, is crucial to preserving the integrity of the education system.
