TSC: 2-Year Internship Prior to Permanent Employment. In a noteworthy development, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has implemented a new requirement. Consequently, teachers engaged in internship terms must now complete a minimum of two years in service. This change aims to make them eligible for permanent and pensionable (PNP) position
This alteration in policy came about because TSC CEO Nancy Macharia was unable to attend the Education Committee meeting in Parliament. Her absence was primarily due to her responsibilities overseeing the administration of the KCSE exams. Thus, she chose to delegate representatives to act on her behalf during the meeting.
TSC’s Director of Staffing, Antonina Lentoijoni, and TSC’s Director of Legal Affairs, Calvin Anyuor, made a significant announcement during their subsequent appearance. Specifically, they revealed that all 46,000 teachers currently serving as interns would experience an automatic transition to PNP positions. This transition would occur upon the successful completion of a rigorous two-year internship.
This represents a shift from the previous policy, where intern teachers, both in primary and secondary schools, received permanent positions after just one year of dedicated service.
Furthermore, it’s essential to note that TSC’s internship policy now specifies a maximum duration of two years for such engagements. Initially, teachers are recruited for a one-year term, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year. This extended internship period totals two years in service.
