This bill, currently open for public participation, delineates over 25 disciplinary incidents that could lead to the loss of service numbers or prosecution for registered teachers.

Serious allegations, such as sexual solicitation and sodomy, are among the offenses listed in the bill. Alongside less severe infractions like document falsification and hosting students in teachers’ homes. Specifically, the bill deems hosting learners in teachers’ residences, guest houses, hotels, or lodging as disciplinary offenses. Furthermore, categorizing involving students in household chores at teachers’ homes as a major offense.
The offenses span from professional misconduct, such as negligence of duty and chronic lateness, to behavioral issues like drunkenness, fighting, and the use of vulgar language. Penalties for these transgressions range from warnings and surcharges to six-month suspensions or removal from the register. Authorities may also impose more severe actions, such as forcing retirement, dismissing, or terminating membership.
Despite the strict measures, teachers can appeal before authorities strike their names off the register. Recent cases saw 23 teachers deregistered by the TSC due to various disciplinary infractions. However, while the Commission published details of their removal in a Gazette notice. They did not disclose the specific charges against these teachers.
The Gazette notice stated, “In exercise of powers conferred by section 30 (1) (e) of the Teachers Service Commission Act. The commission desires to inform the public that it has removed the individuals whose names are specified in the Schedule below from the Register of Teachers, in accordance with the provision of section 30 (2) of the Teachers Service Commission Act.
