Dr. Reuben Nthamburi, Director of Quality Assurance at TSC, emphasized the potential of this recruitment drive, backed by adequate government funding, to alleviate the scarcity of teachers, especially in the recently established junior secondary schools. He commended the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education, highlighting last year’s recruitment of 56,000 teachers, while emphasizing that hiring an additional 20,000 would significantly reduce the current deficit of 116,000 teachers.
The government has allocated Sh 26 billion in the upcoming July budget to facilitate the absorption of teachers into permanent and pensionable positions on the payroll.
Significantly, the education budget assigns the largest share to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), with a portion of Sh 369.94 billion earmarked for teacher remuneration and promotion.
This allocation also encompasses the confirmation of over 20,000 intern teachers recruited in February 2023, who are currently in their second internship term, slated to conclude this year. Graduates will be placed in job group C2, while those with PTE certificates will commence at grade B5.
Among the 46,000 teachers serving on internship terms, we will prioritize interns who have completed two years for permanent positions.
During the Parliament presentation of the 2024–2025 government budget appropriations, Honourable Ndindi Nyoro, Chairman of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, announced that they would place graduate interns in job group C2, while their counterparts with PTE certificates would commence at grade B5.
Acknowledging the prevailing challenge, Macharia conceded during a media briefing that most junior secondary schools are grappling with severe teacher shortages.
