TSC’s Teacher Promotions and Vacancy Fill-Up
TSC’s Teacher Promotions and Vacancy Fill-Up. To address concerns about job stagnation in the service sector, the government has announced another round of promotions for 36,505 teachers through the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC). In a recent statement at the Kenya Primary Schools Headteachers Association conference in Mombasa, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia highlighted the commission’s lack of funding for teacher advancement since 2011, prior to the recent allocation of Sh1 billion for this purpose during the 2023–2024 fiscal year.
Expressing gratitude for the government’s financial commitment, Macharia revealed that the commission had posted 36,505 positions for teacher promotions, targeting 17,914 elementary school instructors across all grade levels. However, despite lowering requirements, the TSC faced challenges in attracting applicants, especially in Special Needs Education, where a significant shortage was evident.
Emphasizing the urgency of filling these crucial positions, Macharia encouraged those invited for interviews from December 4 to attend without failure. She also urged unemployed teachers to apply for jobs advertised nationwide, cautioning against restricting job searches to their home counties.
Highlighting the government’s allocation for teacher recruitment, which reached 56,000 in the past year, Macharia expressed concern about unfilled vacancies. Citations highlighted instances across regions, such as the Rift Valley, Kajiado, Samburu, Turkana, North Eastern, and Wajir.
In the Eastern region, out of 10,614 advertised opportunities, 72 remained unfilled. Similar challenges were noted in the Coast, Central, and other regions. Despite TSC’s commitment to implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum, challenges persist, and Macharia underscored the commission’s dedication to addressing staffing gaps.
Notably, TSC completed training for 56,928 teachers last month, encompassing newly recruited junior school teachers and those deployed from primary schools. This comprehensive approach aims to address staffing gaps and enhance teacher competence in alignment with national educational goals.
